Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that affects roughly about 1% of the earth's population. While hyperhidrosis is the medical term given to this condition, it is most commonly referred to as excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis comes in the form of excessive sweaty hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), excessive sweaty feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), excessive sweaty armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis) and through facial blushing. It is common for someone to experience a combination of excessive sweaty hands and feet at the same time, while others may suffer from either of the above conditions individually. Either case, hyperhidrosis, while not a fatal disease or anything of the like, is indeed a serious matter which can lead some rather embarassing moments and ackward situations.

The difference between a hyperhidrosis sufferer and someone not affected by this condition is the amount of excessive sweating caused by any particular circumstance. As we all know the act of prespiration is a natural bodily function that occurs in all healthy individuals. Sweating is a neccessary function for the control and maintenance of our skin and natural body temperature. Our body's automatic nervous system, also known as the Sympathetic Nervous System, is what regulates this prespiration which is a natural secretion of bodily fluids mostly made up of water. This occurs when our bodies are exposed to high environmetal temperatures, exercise, and some stressful situations or encounters. However, a hyperhidrosis sufferer will experience some extreme measures of prespiration at any given point regardless of temperature or exercise.

As mentioned before, hyperhidrosis can occur in the palms of the hands which is referred to as palmar hyperhidrosis. This is perhaps the most common type of hyperhidrosis and can be the most embarrassing one because it can limit the amount of interaction you will have with others. Common interactions like shaking hands or more personal interactions with the opposite sex can be uncomfortable due to excessive sweating of the hands and the fear that the other person may feel disgusted or turned off.

Plantar hyperhidrosis involes the excessive sweating of the feet and is usually common to experience it at the same time as palmar hyperhidrosis. While this condition is not as noticeable as excessive sweating of the hands due to the fact that you can hide it with socks and shoes, it can still be an embarassing matter when interacting with the opposite sex. Not to mention how uncomfortable it feels to walk around with sweaty feet all the time.

Axillary hyperhidrosis can also lead to some embarassing moments and discomfort. This condition involves excessive sweating around the armpit area and can lead to sweat dripping down your pits and eventually dampening the armpit areas of your shirt. Just like hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet, it can occur at anytime regardless of temperature or exercise. However, stressful and risky situations seem to be the most common cause of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Facial hyperhidrosis or blushing is caused by excessive sweating from the top of the forehead. During stressful situations, this condition can be quite ackward and may lead others to think that you are nervous or insecure about yourself or performance.

Hyperhidrosis is a serious matter that can have disastrous effects on one's self esteem and interaction with others. While this condition only affects about 1% of the population, there are some treatments for hyperhidrosis that can be used to help control this predicament.
