Plantar Hyperhidrosis:
Excessive Sweaty Feet

Plantar hyperhidrosis is the medically given term to excessive sweaty feet. For those not familiar with this condition, it involves an excessive amount of sweat secreted from the feet which leads to many ackward and embarassing situations such as smelly shoes and toes. It is a serious matter which affects about 1% of the population. While the embarassing circumstance are enough to cause one to seek medical treatment for hyperhidrosis, there are other consequences that come from excessive sweaty feet such as fungal foot infections in particularly athlete's foot and toenail fungus.

The main questions is why is it that some people excessively sweat from their feet? Well, this abnormality can be explained as plantar hyperhidrosis, which studies show to be a result of an overactive sympathetic nervous system. Our bodies need to remain balanced at all times including body temperature. The reason we prespire as human beings is a result of being over heated and the body needing to cool down. It is a natural procedure which occurs every single day at any given time, sometimes we do not even notice it. The problem starts when this balance is broken which is the main reason for plantar hyperhidrosis. The excessive sweaty feet is a product of an unbalanced sympathetic nervous system, secreting more sweat than needed.

So why does this balance get thrown off? Well, it all boils down to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the part of our brain that oversees prespiration and its related functions. When the body's temeperature rises, the hypothalamus sends signals to the sweat nerves within the sympathetic nervous system which communicates the distress to the sweat glands. The sweat glands will at that point secrete enough prespiration to cool and bring down the body's temperature back to normal. Unfortunately, when plantar hyperhidrosis occurs, the sweat glands will overlook the commands from the sympathetic nervous system and secrete an amass of sweat, greater than neccessary and since the soles of your feet contain more eccrine sweat glands than other parts of the body, it will lead to excessive sweaty feet.

There are some ways to control excessive sweaty feet which have become more and more popular over the years. Surgery is one of the most sought out treatment for plantar hyperhidrosis. ETS, Endoscopic Transthoracis Sympathectomy is the leading surgical procedure to cure plantar hyperhidrosis which involves cutting the sympathetic nerve. However, surgery tends to get really expensive and comes with risks that most people would rather avoid.

Another way to help control plantar hyperhidrosis is by reducing the amount of bacteria accumulated on your feet. You should bathe everyday and cleanse your feet well which will significantly reduce the bacteria lingering on the skin of your feet and control the amount of foul foot odor. Make sure to dry your feet completely especially the damp areas in between the toes where fungi tends to grow. Certain powders can also control excessive sweaty feet not while certain branded insoles can also help reduce the moisture in your shoes.

Other forms of plantar hyperhidrosis treatments involve alternative methods such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, and even hypnosis. Although these treatments do not hold a 100% efficiency rate, the potential in these alternative methods have not been denied and many people today have found away to control their excessive sweaty feet through combinations of these methods.
